String wizard Darol Anger in his foreword to A Practical Guide for String Players:
"Donna gets it all right. I suspect that the general level of fiddle knowledge and playing will take a major uptick soon after [Fiddling Demystified] is published, just as other great music books such as Earl Scruggs’ original banjo book, O’Neill‘s great Irish fiddling reference and the infamous jazz Real Book influenced the course of musicians’ lives and work."

Tune to learn: Raven's Wing © 2008 Donna Hébert & Max Cohen, www.fiddlingdemystified.com
Mp3 file with Donna and Max on fiddle and guitar is 3.6 MB. No sheet music this time, but try learning this slow air by ear. The A part is in Em and the B is in E major.
Written in memory of Donna's father, Rodger Edward Hinds, 83, and her friend and mentor Julie Lacourse Beaudoin, 87. Rodger died March 5 while Donna and Max were visiting the Grand Canyon with Jane Rothfield. Julie Beaudoin passed on April 8 while actually visiting the Grand Canyon with her family.

The Beaudoin family sadly lost Julie Beaudoin on April 8. (Click on her name for the full obituary). She was 87. Julie passed away while visiting the Grand Canyon with family members. We feel her loss keenly and are grateful for her presence in the band for the past year, where she was "Memère" and adopted us into the Beaudoin clan.
The widow of reknowned fiddler Louis Beaudoin, Julie Lacourse Beaudoin carried the song traditions of ballads and chansons a répondre for her family, passing it down to her daughters Carmen and Nina, who sing her songs in Beaudoin Legacy performances.
On March 29, we played a double-bill concert with sister Franco-American group Chanterelle in Cumberland, Rhode Island at the Blackstone River Theatre. This was Mémère's last performance with us before she passed away April 8.
We are very grateful to have not only an audio, but a good film recording of that concert (click here for the finale on YouTube), along with hundreds of professionally shot photos of the day's events. We'll have a CD of the March 29 concert available this summer, and hope to have a DVD of the concert available in time for Christmas. The group has also applied for funding to produce a documentary film about the Beaudoin family's music and influence. |

Beginning this fall, the Beaudoin Legacy is teaching school programs in Vermont - contact Donna Hebert for details. Carmen Bombardier, Donna Hébert and the group lead classroom workshops, assemblies, residencies and teacher-training for foreign language, music, history and social studies classes. Focusing on Franco-American history & culture, the group works with grades 4-12, with programs available for college foreign language and music departments. The group is also booking college and community concert series. Vermont presenters can contact the VT Council on the Arts to receive matching funds for our performances through the NEA's American Masterpiece Roster. |

Groovemama - new website & tour notes |
NEW GROOVEMAMA WEBSITE! - programs, schools, tours, press kit, catalog, Great Groove Bands, summer camps
Swinging through the Southwest
Groovemama - Donna Hébert, Jane Rothfield and Max Cohen - had a great trip out to New Mexico and Arizona in February and March. We found new friends and reconnected with long-time ones. Donna taught French-Canadian fiddling to string teachers at the American String Teachers' Association Conference in Albuquerque and the band played for the Albuquerque contra dance as well as a house concert and fiddle/guitar workshops at the home of Old-Tiime musicians Laurie and Jane Phillips.
Jane Rothfield and Donna Hébert attended the string conference and started jam sessions whenever possible, joining Darol Anger and Renata Bratt (who teaches at Fiddling Demystified summer camp in July) for several jams at the conference. We made some instant fiddling buddies at the conference, including David Kaemmer of southern Arizona. He teaches fiddle and has a useful lesson service available online called "Tune of the Month." Check him out - he's a really good fiddler and and teacher and writes some nice tunes.
Groovemama also played for concerts, contradances and workshops in Phoenix and Tucson before flying home. Especially fun was renewing old times with Tucson caller Tod Whittemore. We hope to have more opportunities to play with Tod.
For us as easterners, the climate change from cold high desert to saguaro cactus desert in Tucson was staggering. We were surprised that you could drive 200 miles from winter to spring. Wow! |
Upcoming tours include
• Florida (Oct-Nov '08)
• Atlanta to Massachusetts (Feb-Mar '09)
Please contact Donna about sponsoring a house concert or fiddle, banjo or guitar workshop with Groovemama.

By the time we got to Phoenix from Flagstaff, it was summer!
|
On the way to Phoenix from Albuquerque, we stopped in Flagstaff and visited the Grand Canyon. It was a bittersweet and beautiful day because Donna's father was dying in Florida and he passed away that afternoon as we sat at Hermit's Rest, watching the ravens wheel and soar at the canyon's edge. One bird even visited us and made raven noises, holding us enthralled.
In memory of her father, Rodger E. Hinds, Donna wrote a slow air with Max Cohen. Two weeks later, in an uncanny twist of fate, Julie Beaudoin, 87-year old band member in the Beaudoin Legacy, passed away while visiting the Grand Canyon's south rim with her family. Called "Raven's Wing" (click to listen), the tune soars like the raven over the canyon rim. |
